Beat Street is a love letter to retro brawlers, echoing the likes of classic arcade title Double Dragon. Yet here you duff up all manner of evil gang members by way of using only a single thumb.
This is quite the achievement. Old-style scrolling beat ’em ups might not have had a modern-day gamepad littered with buttons and triggers, but they still had a joystick and two action buttons. Here, though, you drag to move, tap to punch, and use gestures to fire off special moves.
It works wonderfully. Beat Street gradually reveals new abilities and features – not least weapon pick-ups, one of which rather unsportingly has you smack opponents over the head with what’s described as an ’80s brick.

Other games news: League of Legends patch 9.4 is now officially on the way. The new update arrived on the PBE last night, and while it’s not huge at the moment, there are a few significant changes to a handful of champions, and an elegant new skin line to check out.
When it comes to balance changes, the adjustment to Vi that were promised in League of Legends patch 9.3 have arrived this time out, with an extra change to her ult. There are also tweaks to Sylas, whose Q should now be more reliable, and changes to most of Rek’Sai’s abilities – the Void Burrower will now find it easier to move around underground, and only the champions with the fastest feet will be able to dodge her ultimate.
When it comes to skins, Riot seems to be following up on this year’s wonderful Lunar Revel skins with a new origami-themed skin line. Anivia and Nunu & Willump both get some very impressive Papercraft skins thanks to the new (extremely colourful) cosmetics.
After years of development and multiple delays, Microsoft’s next big exclusive, Crackdown 3, launches this week–and you can play it for only $1 if you meet a few requirements.
As a first-party game, Crackdown 3 is free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. And right now, Microsoft is offering an one-month Xbox Game Pass trial for only $1. The catch is that you need to be a new subscriber to enjoy the savings.
Xbox Game Pass already has “millions” of subscribers, but if you’re not among them, right now seems to be a good time to jump in. You can sign up for Xbox Game Pass on the Xbox website or through your console.
Crackdown 3 is coming to Xbox One and PC, but Xbox Game Pass is only on Xbox One right now. It could come to PC and other platforms down the road, but no announcements have been made as of it. Crackdown 3 launches on February 15.
I had very mixed feelings when Apex Legends was announced. On one hand, Titanfall and its sequel are two of my favorite shooters, offering an incredibly fast, almost balletic sense of movement that made otherwise standard skirmishes feel fresh and alive. The idea of developer Respawn taking that to the battle royale genre and throwing in charming Overwatch-style characters was incredibly exciting. But there was one very particular aspect of the game that made me wary: you can only play it in teams. As someone who spends hours in Fortnite solo and hates the idea of voice chat with strangers, this was an instant turn-off.
But thanks to a handful of incredibly clever design decisions, Apex Legends is the rare team-based shooter where voice chat isn’t a necessity. You can be antisocial and still have a lot of fun.
Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, and it has teams of three battling it out across a war-torn sci-fi landscape to be the last group standing. It’s a class-based game where you pick from a group of heroes, each of which fits snugly into an archetype like “support” or “tank.” They also all have special abilities that charge up over the course of a match. And just like in Fortnite and its contemporaries, the battlefield shrinks as the match goes on, forcing you into close contact with your opponents.
